I grew up in Southern Idaho fishing some of that area's famous rivers and streams, including the Snake, Salmon, Boise and Owyhee Rivers and Tributaries. In 1992 I
moved further west to Oregon's Willamette Valley and have been chasing steelhead and salmon species ever since. My wife Lori and I currently reside on the banks of the
Little North Fork of the Santiam River which offers steelhead and trout fishing opportunities.
I'm not always a fly fisherman though and enjoy a variety of the methods the sport of fishing offers - trolling for Salmon in Oregon bays, bait and heavy tackle for Columbia and Snake River Sturgeon, Jig and Float drifting for Steelhead on Pacific Northwest rivers. I have fond memories as a youngster jigging for crappie or plugging for bass in Idaho's various ponds and reservoirs with my grandfather.
Living in the Santiam Canyon provides the opportunity to "field test" my patterns - quite literally, in my own back yard. Sending
out my "Pro Staff" (7 kids) with a handful of flies provides instant feedback on how well the flies work! (I can hear the shouts of "CAUGHT ONE" from the house.)
I'm also within driving distance of some incredible Steelhead and Salmon fisheries and have tested the Fly and Jig patterns all over the
Pacific Northwest.
I am by no means an innovator, but rather a student of some of the areas fly tying legends - Shewey, Kauffman, Knudson and others. I've studied their styles and methods and anything else I can gather from their books or articles. It's also quite fascinating to be knee deep in the Santiam and wonder how many bright Steelies Shewey may have battled in that particular run or tailout. Or be standing on a log jam of downed firs in a High Cascade lake wondering if Kaufmann ever teased the cutthroats with his unique patterns from the very same spot. I strive to produce a product that both the fish and fisherman find appealing (primarily the fish!). The fishing flies and jigs are made to withstand the rigors of a day of casting, and numerous battles with large fish. That's not to say that our Classic Reproductions aren't fishing worthy, only that they are constructed with a primary focus on visual appeal.
2011 marked the beginning of my business relationship with The Orvis Company. I became an Orvis Endorsed
Guide through the Orvis Endorsed Lodges, Outfitters and Guides program (ELOG) and also had the
YakCaddis fly pattern included in the Orvis Catalogs. The YakCaddis pattern was co-developed with Orvis Guide, Derek Young of Emerging Rivers Guide Service
in Washington in 2009 for use during the Fall (or October) Caddis hatch so prevalent on many Pacific Northwest waters.
